Jay Grimes began his studies with Joe Pilates in the mid-sixties in New York, when he was a dancer on Broadway and in Ballet. Jay maintained a consistent Pilates schedule for the entirety of his dancing career, and is adamant that this is why he managed to completely avoid injury. Jay worked with Joe for many years and after Joe's death continued with Joe's wife Clara, for another 10 years until her death. Jay began ;teaching in the original 8th Avenue studio in New York then moved with the studio to 56th Street where he taught (and studied) alongside Romana Kryzanowska and John Winters.
